Save Singnage Strategy
Saving signs that reflect the ethos of the city, its heritage, or speak of a particular marginal culture is important. Saving signage is easier than preventing heritage structures and geographical formations from being eroded by the land sharks. Conversely signage is as easy to loose as no one really cares for them as much. However if we concertedly preserve signage then a certain ethos is created. This might have a spill off in terms of generating awareness about urban culture: which has historical roots and lineages just as traditional culture; it encompasses many marginal cultures and also provides a space for diversified public expression.
STRATEGIES:
1. Adopt A Sign
Individuals and organisations can adopt a sing in their neighbourhood and offer to pay the owner for its upkeep. The owner may well deny the financial assistance but it will still make him/her aware of the importance of what they own. And what they own in a sense is a part of our shared culture. Sponsoring the upkeep of the signage shall make sure that it does not fall into disrepair and continues to shine in all its glory. Sometimes expert help or a special technique may be needed for the upkeep of an old sign. The sponsors shall have to ensure that not only funds but the right resources are made available. However, unlike heritage monuments, this is never likely to be a highly difficult task. Although it may require some special effort rather than an off the shelf solution.
A regular repair of old signage around the city is likely to keep old craftspersons also in business: people whose skill is mostly outdated, but is nevertheless a prised skill worthy of being passed down to at least a few who care for it – even if only to study and document it.
2. A Signage Museum/ Gallery
Signs that HAVE to be removed could perhaps be stored here. Some could become a part of the museum/ gallery’s permanent collection, while others could be auctioned off to collectors and enthusiasts. Sign makers could be employed to restore some of these…
